Now there’s even an app for it. Every new year, many of us will commit to a healthier diet, forgoing the Oreos and Lays for fruits and baked taro chips. Unfortunately, as most of us can attest, falling off the proverbial wagon can happen quickly. But now there’s help and it can be downloaded directly to your smartphone. Google Play and iTunes offer a vast selection of apps that can help us eat better — and I’m not talking Candy Crush, either.

Substitutions

Platform: Apple iPhone and iPad

This app allows the user to search healthier alternatives for a number of ingredients. It is also helpful for those who suffer food allergies or are in search of vegan and gluten-free options.

Seafood Watch From the Monterey Bay Aquarium

Platform: Android, Apple iPhone

This app makes it easy to choose seafood and sushi that’s good for you and good for the oceans. Some of the features include up-to-date recommendations; alternatives to seafood on the “Avoid” list; and the ability to add restaurants and stores that offer eco-friendly seafood.

Food Tripping

Platform: Android

Need an alternative to the calorie-laden burger and fries? Try this GPS-based app, which shows you better options close to you with a fun, simple interface that puts the healthy food at your fingertips. You can even use it if you’re on the mainland.

Fooducate

Platform: Android, Apple iPhone

This app does it all. It counts calories. It helps you lose weight. It tracks your food intake and exercise. It reveals the quality of calories, not just quantity. And it analyzes information found in product nutrition panels and ingredient lists.

Superfoods

Platform: Apple iPhone and iPad

By definition superfoods are calorie sparse and nutrient dense, and are superior sources of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients that we need but can’t make ourselves. This category of food is also known to boost immune systems and memory, and stave off disease while also providing more energy.

Whole Foods Markets Recipe

Platform: Apple iPhone and iPad

Browsing through this app will certainly induce a few growls from the stomach. With more than 3,000 recipes from which to choose, you’re sure to find one to match your needs. The app also keeps track of store specials, sales and events.

Eat Slower

Platform: Apple iPhone and iPad

We know it’s not good to scarf down a meal. So slow down and enjoy the flavors. This app provides an adjustable timer that you can use to pace yourself while you eat. This means more chewing and a lot more appreciation for what you consume.

Dirty Dozen

Platform: Android, Apple iPhone

Dirty Dozen refers to the 12 fruits and vegetables that contain the most pesticide residue. It’s handy to have at a supermarket because it also lists 15 popular fruits and vegetables with the lowest amounts of pesticide residue. And the Full List ranks 53 produce items, which may help you decide whether to buy organic on items in between the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15.
